A police officer with the Dallas Police department is in critical condition after he was hit on Sunday, October 21, 2018 while laying flares down following an unrelated hit and run accident in Dallas according to Dallas News.

Details of the car accident in Dallas, Texas

According to the authorities, the Dallas car accident which resulted in serious personal injury to a Dallas officer happened around 6:30 a.m. at the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 near Mountain Creek. Police were responding to an unrelated Dallas hit and run accident and decided to close down the far right lane of the westbound lanes as a precaution. Investigation reveals that a Toyota Venza drove around a police patrol car with its emergency lights on onto the road shoulder.  When the Venza re-entered the highway, it hit an officer standing in the far right lane who was placing flares. The officer was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center after sustaining severe injuries.

How dangerous is the shoulder of the road?

A National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation reveals that almost four out of every ten motor accidents involving fatalities, across the United States, involve a car at the side of the road. Road shoulders should only be used in case of emergency or when there is no alternative, and even with that, necessary precautions should be taken.

Pulling over on the shoulder of a road is especially dangerous at night. This is because when other motorists see lights coming from a car ahead, he might think the car is traveling along the same lane as him. Sometimes, before they realize that is not the case, it will be too late to avoid the car.  When next you have a flat tire along a highway, the safest option is to try and drive your car towards the nearest exit. The worst thing that can happen when you drive while having a flat tire is for the rim to get damaged and it is better to have a damaged rim than to risk your life.
