Drunk Drivers Cause Many Serious Car Accidents

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offense. Since 2002, it has been ruled illegal in the 50 states in the United States. It is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% and above. Some states have tiers of penalty for drivers found to be drunk while driving depending on how drunk he is as shown by his blood alcohol concentration. The tiers are for 0.08, 0.10, and 0.16% or higher. Penalties for impaired driving include fines, loss of driving privileges and, repeated offenders face, jail time. A BAC above 0.08 is the standard for establishing that a driver is driving under the influence of alcohol. Before the blood alcohol level is checked, one can identify a drunk driver with the following signs:

  • Having trouble staying in their lane
  • Going over the yellow center line
  • Driving at a dangerous speed
  • Failing to use headlights at night
  • Failing roadside sobriety tests
  • Slurring words
  • Having red or glassy eyes
