What Happens if an Uber or Lyft Crashes into My Car?
In recent years, ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft have experienced so much growth that conventional taxis are becoming outdated. In 2016, it was estimated that the leading ridesharing companies, Uber and Lyft, had 52 million combined riders per month. Uber alone gave 4 billion rides in 2017. To put this in context, the total distance covered by Uber rides in the last five years would be equal to the distance it will take to travel to Saturn and return!
The progress experienced by these company makes it nearly impossible for one not to share roads with Uber cars. So then, what happens in case an Uber driver got into an accident?
Unlike taxis, buses, and other modes of public transportation, ridesharing companies try to argue they are not “common carriers.” They see themselves as the facilitator that brings a driver and a rider together. However, if you can prove that these companies failed in their duty to properly supervise the at-fault driver or they failed to do a thorough background check before hiring the driver, the riding sharing company can be held responsible.
