An Apple self-driving test car was rear-ended while trying to merge onto Lawrence Expressway South, in California in the company’s first recorded crash in its trials on public roads, according to multiple media outlets including ARN.
Details of the self-driving car auto accident
On Friday, August 24, 2018, at around 3 p.m., one of Apple’s self-driving cars, a kitted out Lexus RX 450h, was attempting to merge with traffic on the Lawrence Expressway in Sunnyvale, California when it was rear-ended. According to a report by California Department of Motor Vehicles, Apple’s test Lexus was traveling at less than 1 mph while merging, when it was struck by a 2016 Nissan Leaf traveling about 15 mph.
Both vehicles sustained damage, but neither car’s passengers suffered any injuries, the report continued. A spokesman for the company confirmed that Apple had filed the report but did not comment further.
In 2016, Apple secured a permit to test self-driving vehicles in California. The company has been testing cars on the road since last year and now has permits for more than 60 autonomous vehicles.
The safety of autonomous cars has become a source of concern for U.S. transportation regulators after one of Uber’s self-driving vehicles hit and killed a woman in March in Arizona, causing the company to shut down its testing activities.
California Department of Motor Vehicles said it had received 95 self-driving vehicle crash reports as of 31 August. Many companies have received permits to test autonomous vehicles on public roads, but these permits require the presence of a human safety driver.
