How to avoid a secondary car crash
Secondary car accidents are the car accidents that happen as a direct or indirect result of a previous wreck known as the primary car accident. Primary car accidents usually occur all of a sudden, and they are unplanned. Secondary accidents meanwhile are typically in close proximity to the primary accident.
While they can happen anywhere, secondary car accidents are common during high traffic congestion, in populated areas, and on highways with multiple lanes. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), about 20 percent of all auto accidents involve secondary crashes.
Causes of Secondary Car Crashes
According to FHWA estimates, the probability that a secondary car accident will occur increases 2.8 percent every minute the primary crash continues to be a hazard. Some of the common primary incident that results in secondary accidents include:
- Engine related accidents or stalled vehicles- This can cause lane obstruction
- Tailgating
- Rubbernecking
- Swerving to avoid strayed animals
- Road debris
- Hazardous material spills
- Unsecured loads and cargo
- Distracted driving
How to Avoid Secondary Crashes
The likelihood of getting involved in a secondary car accident can be reduced in the following ways
- Always use your mirrors
- Leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front- this will give you enough time to react in case of any unforeseen incident
- Always be aware of your surroundings
- Avoid rubbernecking
- Don’t drive aggressively
- Look farther up the road to see if any cars are stopping
- Avoid distractions while driving
